VICTORIAN PENDANT IN 14 CT GOLD AND ONYX

Antique pendant from the Victorian era c. 1890 which features a rectangular onyx slab with a slightly convex oval. In the center it has a bezel with glass paste.
The 14k gold frame is richly crafted with slab hemispheres and curls at the corners.

This jewel is part of the so-called sentimental jewelery or mourning jewellery. The emotional value concerned not only the passage from mother to children and grandchildren in memory of family love, engagement and wedding promise, but also the celebration of mourning as a feeling of love and eternal fidelity. This fashion prevailed during the Victorian era after Queen Victoria suffered the loss of her husband Alberto.
